Epos ES-28N: Proof There Are Still Surprises in Loudspeaker Design
Skeptics may claim there are “no surprises left in loudspeaker construction,” but LP International’s review of the new Epos ES-28N shows otherwise. Under the stewardship of Karl-Heinz Fink, the once-legendary brand has been revived with bold innovation.
Fink, who already impressed the industry with his Borg and Kim designs, has created the first-ever three-way loudspeaker under the Epos name. Finished in a striking mint green, the ES-28N combines meticulous cabinet engineering with clever driver design. As the review notes, it is “unashamedly neutral, yet always reproducing with real flesh and blood.”
Setup is straightforward—“set it up, angle it slightly, and that’s it”—and the broad sweet spot makes it as user-friendly as it is refined. The cabinet features a double-layer sandwich construction with heavy bracing, while the bass system employs straight-coned woofers and a downward-firing reflex port with resonance control. The result? Bass that is “fast and powerful,” timpani strokes delivered with “speed and conciseness,” and orchestral foundations that march “inexorably forward.”
Musically, the ES-28N proved versatile. Classical works like Mahler’s Seventh Symphony displayed coherence across complex orchestrations, while Kruder & Dorfmeister’s KD Sessions revealed “a rolling deep bass flooding the room” and “sparkling sound tinkering” at the top end. The review also praises its party credentials, with dub and grime delivered at full force—provided the amplifier is up to the task.
After extensive listening, the reviewer concluded that the ES-28N is the larger all-rounder of the range, offering a more “sonorous, even serious tone” than the exuberant ES-14N, but capable of uninhibited fun when driven hard.
The final word? “And then someone tell me there are no more surprises.”
